Another Trappist beer less

The fate of Engelszell Abbey in Engelhartszell, Austria, is sealed. The last four monks are leaving the monastery today. There is a lack of monastic offspring.

A commission appointed by the Trappist Order last fall examined the situation and found no other option than to abandon the site. For the material goods of the monastery, the monastery buildings, church and the enterprises, one wants to find a use as catholic as possible, it is stated from the abbey. Since a monk must supervise the brewery in order to obtain the "Authentic Trappist Product" seal, the beer from Engelszell will have to do without the hexagonal logo in the future. This brings the number of Trappist breweries down to nine.

There were also too few monks in Achel, Belgium, and the Sint-Benedictus Abbey there was abandoned in 2021. Spencer in USA closed its brewery last year, but for economic reasons. The following Trappist breweries will remain in the beer world - at least for the time being: Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren (Belgium), La Trappe and Zundert in the Netherlands, Tre Fontane in Rome and the English Tynt Meadow.
