BestBrewChallenge 2023: Dark Doppelbock

A Dark Doppelbock is to be brewed as the competition beer for the BestBrewChallenge 2023. This beer style is characterized by a strong, not too sweet and malty character as well as a full body. Hop flavor and bitterness are rather low. The beer color is typically between light brown and black. The darkest malt from the Bestmalz Röstmalz range - BEST Röstmalz eXtra - must be used. Nevertheless, according to the beer style definition, there must be no pronounced roasted malt character in the Dark Doppelbock. This is the challenge facing the participants in the BestBrewChallenge 2023.

The competition is open to home and hobby brewers, pub breweries, and even institutes and large breweries from anywhere in the world. Participation is free of charge.

A special feature of the BestMalzChallenge is that the time of brewing is fixed. Previously, all participants were supposed to mash on the same day, but this year the period will be extended to four days for the first time. Brewing will take place between 20 and 23 April 2023. The closing date for entries for the competition beers is 5 July 2023.

The winning beer will be brewed on a large scale and served at the Bestmalz booth at BrauBeviale in Nuremberg, Germany (28 to 30 November, 2023), where also the award ceremony will take place. The first-place winner will win a trip and overnight stay for him- or herself and a companion. Other prizes include lab beer analyses and awards for creative bottle labels and packaging.

Each beer entered will be judged by professionals. Their feedback will be sent to the brewers along with a participant T-shirt.
