Brewer's Advent 2023 Day 22: Kraftbierwerkstatt - Black Forest Can

‘Kraftbierwerkstatt’ (Craft Beer Garage) is located in Böblingen, the town in the south of Germany that is also home to the largest factory of the car manufacturer Daimler Benz.

The founder of Kraftbierwerkstatt, Oliver Koblenzer, was once infected with the craft beer virus while on vacation in Hawaii. Back home, he learned how to brew on his own and founded the brand 'Kraftbierwerkstatt'.

Oliver does not have his own brewery, he is gipsy brewer and as such rents space in the brewhouses of small and medium-sized breweries, using the brewing equipment available there, from the brewing kettle to bottling.

Black Forest Porter

Not far from Böblingen is the Black Forest National Park. This is where the famous cuckoo clocks and Black Forest gateau come from. Kraftbierwerkstatt's porter is named after this beautiful region.

Take a drink every time you hear “expert.” :) Tasting a Rheinheitsgebot porter, it really is a porter for those who don’t like porters. I don’t see how you can brew a great stout or porter with only the four ingredients. Yet it is an excellent, quality, and clean beer.

Great to see Peter in the video. Merry Christmas. Next year, I'd love to see a rotating panel of Kalea employees (who likely know beer) and hear more about the brewery, their various styles of beer, and a little bit on their town, and any inn or restaurant they have. Prost!

This is not the beer for day 22 in my Advent Calendar 2023. The beer in my calendar is Kartauser, Doppelbock Dunkel. This is a dark beer as well, but not as dark as the Black Forest. It has coffee notes and is a pleasant drinking beer.

Didn’t get this one, so having a black lager at 50 West Brewery in Chillicothe, Ohio, USA. Philip’s Medical is also in Böblingen. I foundly remember being served fresh pretzels (alas no beer) during a business meeting! Prost!

Wrong beer again. It was going good so far. At least it began happening later this year. Good beer nonetheless.

I give this one a 5. Top 4 beer for me in the calendar. I like the idea of a gypsy brewer who shares his vision and skills around the country. Cheers, Prost!

Like so many unfortunate Americans, #22 did not greet me with Kraftbierwerkstatt Black Forest Porter. (Thank you local Alcohol Control Commision. Not!) Based on the previous 21 excellent beer selections, I'm sure this Porter is so good, all of the UK and Ireland are weeping right now. Did anyone else receive Memminger Brewery's Kartäuser Doppellbock Dunkel? This is a high-grain beer: Very malty character; & 7.5% ABV. Overall, more malt than hops, which I think is the intent for Dopplebock. And, of course, ridiculously delicate and refined! Super high-quality malty beer!

Sixth beer that isn't in the calendar. Why is this a recurring problem?
